Washington is a community property state. This means there is a rebuttable presumption that any property acquired during a marriage is community property, with some exceptions. Assets that each party brings to the marriage are separate property. During a divorce, separation or the dissolution of a domestic partnership, it will be necessary to determine what is community property and what is separate property. Once the parties determine what property is community property and what is separate property, the assets must be properly valued. These assets may include:
